Each system on an aircraft or helicopter or propeller system has a specific Air Transport Association code assigned to it. These codes establish the ATA Chapter for all the Component Maintenance Manuals for subcomponents. 

 These are generally agreed upon codes accepted by the FAA, EASA, CAA, TC, industry and other airworthiness authorities.
